ChatGPT or Claude? The one-week test that settles it for your business

Both are good. Only one will fit how your team works. Run this one-week test on your real tasks and the answer picks itself.

For a small business, ChatGPT and Claude are both strong choices, so the deciding factor is your own work. Run the same real tasks through both for a week and keep the one your team reaches for without being asked. Then set it up as a business account in the company's name, give it your documents and your tone, and train the team on it. The setup and the daily habit matter more than the brand.

Here is what the two have in common, what differs for a business, how to run a fair one-week test and how to set up the one you choose.

What do ChatGPT and Claude have in common?

Both are general AI assistants. ChatGPT is made by OpenAI and Claude by Anthropic. For the everyday work of a small business, they cover the same ground:

  • Drafting emails, quote letters, job posts and review replies.
  • Summarizing long email threads, documents and meeting notes.
  • Pulling the details out of a form, an invoice or a page of notes.
  • Answering questions about your own documents once you share them.
  • Working in English, Spanish and many other languages.

Both also offer business plans, where the owner controls who has access and the data settings are made for business use. That overlap is good news. The choice carries less risk than it seems, and you can decide on what matters to your team.

What differs between ChatGPT and Claude for a small business?

The differences that matter show up in daily use, on your own work. Look at five things:

  1. How the writing sounds. Give both the same email to answer and the same examples of your voice. Read the drafts aloud and notice which one sounds closer to you.
  2. How it handles your documents. Share the same service list, policy or contract with both and ask the same questions. Check each answer against what you know.
  3. How it fits the tools you already run. Both can connect to other business tools, and the list of connections changes often. Check each one against the email, calendar and file storage your team uses today, whether that is Gmail, Outlook or something else.
  4. How it feels to the people using it. The tool your team opens without a reminder is the one that gives hours back.
  5. How you manage the accounts. Look at how you add and remove people, who sees what and where the data settings live. The owner should be able to do this without calling anyone.

You may hear that one is better at writing and the other at something else. Those impressions shift with each new release, so trust your own test over anything you read, this article included.

How do you test ChatGPT and Claude on your own work?

A fair test takes one week and a little planning. Use real tasks with names and private details removed, and keep client records out until the business account is set up.

  1. Pick three tasks that repeat every week, such as a customer reply, a quote letter and a summary of a long email thread.
  2. Write down what a good result looks like for each one, in a sentence or two.
  3. Give both tools the same instructions and the same examples, so the comparison is fair.
  4. Ask the people who do those tasks to try both, on the same work, during the same week.
  5. On Friday, put the results side by side and ask each person which one they would keep.

If the results are close, pick the one your team liked using. If they are still close, pick either one and move on. A tool used every day gives more back than a slightly better one used twice.

Should a small business use both ChatGPT and Claude?

Usually one is enough, and one is simpler. A single tool means one set of accounts to manage, one rule sheet, one way of working and one training plan. When someone asks a colleague for help, they are both looking at the same screen.

Two tools can make sense when a specific task clearly works better in the other one, or when one group, such as the office, has needs that differ from the field. If you keep both, give each one a clear job and keep both on business accounts.

How do you set up the one you choose?

The setup is where most of the value comes from. Once the choice is made:

  • Open business accounts in the company's name, with the owner as the admin.
  • Move anyone using a personal account for work onto the business account.
  • Set up a workspace or assistant with your services, policies, tone and a few examples you are proud of.
  • Connect it to the tools the team already uses, where that saves real time.
  • Write a one-page rule sheet: what can go in, what stays out and who reads AI work before it goes out.
  • Train the team on its own tasks, then check in after a few weeks.

Our guide on how to train your team on AI covers that last step in detail.

What if you pick the wrong one?

A wrong pick is easy to fix. The habits your team builds carry over to either tool: how to give context, how to share an example, how to ask for changes and how to check the result. The rule sheet carries over too.

What moves are the instructions and documents you set up. Keep a copy of every instruction you write in a shared document the company owns, and switching stays a small job.

How Banana Blueprint helps you choose and set up AI

Banana Blueprint is a business design and engineering firm in Northeast Ohio. We work in person with owner-led businesses in Kent, Akron and Cleveland, and by video with owners across the U.S. Through our AI consulting, we find where the hours go, run the test on your real tasks, choose between ChatGPT and Claude, set the winner up as business accounts your company owns and connect it to the tools you already use.

Then we train the team on its own work, in English or Español, and stay on as the tools change, so the choice keeps working long after the first month.
